Technique

The 7-second rule, when applied to asking questions, refers to giving the person you are conversing with enough time – about 7 seconds – to think and respond before jumping in with more information or rephrasing the question.

Facilitation

This technique is particularly useful in workshop situations when you want participants to respond. This approach is more inclusive as there are always more introvert participants or people who have more resistance to speak up in front of others.

  1. Ask the Question Clearly: Make sure your question is clear and concise.
  2. Count Silently: After asking the question, count silently up to 7 seconds in your head.
  3. Maintain Eye Contact: Show that you are engaged and patiently waiting for their response.
  4. Resist the Urge to Interrupt: Avoid the temptation to jump in too quickly with further clarification or additional questions.
